25 Years Later We're Still Fighting The Power - @PublicEnemyFTP

I remember turning on the TV and seeing this video for the first time. I was mesmerized as a 16 year old to see the power within the video of a group of people coming together for a united front.  Even at such an early age I recognized what that video meant to me as a black teen.  It meant that there was still work to do to bring about equality in the United States among the races.  I had no idea how much more this video would mean to me 25 years later after Michael Brown and Ferguson, MO.

Seeing the unity that "Fight The Power" displayed in a rap video was nothing short of amazing.  This wasn't a group of rappers coming together on their own for a cause like "Self Destruction" or "We're All in the Same Gang."  This was a video about a rap group marching down the streets of Brooklyn during the time of a political rally and the people just randomly started joining in.  It was just recently that I found out that the neighborhood people showed up only by word of mouth.  There was no plan to have them all there.

I got on board the PE train with their first album, "Yo! Bum Rush the Show!" in 1987.  I was fascinated with the side of blackness they taught that I couldn't get anywhere else at the time.  Remember that this was roughly five years before people starting regularly using the Internet.  In fact, a majority of the black history that I learned as a youth came from listening to Public Enemy.  I would listen to their album and then go to my city library to learn about the people they mentioned.   Stokely Carmichael.  H. Rap Brown.  Huey P. Newton (Huey Freeman on the "Boondocks" series is named after him).  These were people that were never talked about in any history books that I read at school.  And regardless of how people felt about them and what they represented they were still a very important part of black history which is essentially American history.

The video also contained images that will forever be embedded in my brain of Angela Davis, Medgar Evers, Jackie Robinson, signs that encouraged voter registration, and most importantly, youth participation.  There were kids everywhere in this video.  Also, one of the most powerful scenes at the time was at the 6:00 mark when teenager, Tawana Brawley, was shown standing in all white.

Tawana was part of a huge rape case back in 1987 when she accused six white men of raping and defiling her.  Although it was ruled in 1988 that she made up the false allegations against her accusers, she has always stuck by her story and said that the rape occurred.  Seeing her smiling and participating in the video was a sign that she was still standing strong with the support of the black community.  The community had her back.  That sentiment was also shown in Spike Lee's movie, "Do The Right Thing," with a scene that displayed graffiti on the wall that said "Tawana told the truth."  I can still remember the applause in the theater when people saw it during the movie.

"Fight The Power" would prove to have an impact on the consciousness of many people of all colors as it depicted how black people came together to promote unity.  Another important part of the video to note is that it showed how blacks can be peaceful yet firm in making an impact on society.  Despite the "nervous" police presence according to P.E. front man, Chuck D, there were no incidents.  Not one.

Enter 2014.  Music has changed tremendously.  The only people rapping about political consciousness aren't on the radio.  Gone are the days where KRS-1 is rapping "Why is That?" or Gang Starr is dropping knowledge on "Who's Gonna Take The Weight?"

I'll continue to hold on to old school rap although I know it's next to impossible to pass down to younger generations.  They just aren't buying into things from back in the day.  However, I'll do what I can to expose them to conscious rap with hopes that it catches on.  I won't let Public Enemy die with my generation.

Is this not one of the most ridiculous things ever? I don't get it. What in the world has happened to kids parents? How can you have a child capable of something like this unless you're not doing your job? I know all parents aren't slackers, but let's be honest: most of the kids in this video probably do not have proper parenting structure at home.

I love boxing and cage fighting, so I understand the fascination of seeing someone knocked out.  However, at least those people know that they're in a fight.  These people on the street do not.  The fact that these teens target women and children as well makes it even more disturbing to most people.

For those of you who jog or walk with earbuds in your ears, then I would advise you to make sure one of your ears is free to hear around you.  Society gets crazier and crazier each day and a walk to work or a jog in the neighborhood can lead to a concussion or worse.

As for the people perpetrating this act, don't think you're not putting yourself in harm's way as well.  There are more open-carry gun laws being passed and licenses to carry permits being issued.  One mistimed swing can result in you being shot.

(VIDEO) Hitler Gets Pissed at Jay Z

Well, Jay Z is back in the news again. He's not dissing senior citizens on wax this go around. This time, he's apparently not doing anything. I guess that's par for the course for modern day rappers and athletes...

Okay, here's the scoop: two young black kids were racially profiled in a high-end fashion store. A young man was arrested/questioned for purchasing a $350 belt with what was called "a stolen credit card." After a couple of hours in jail, he was released when it was determined that the card was actually his.

A young lady purchased a $2,500 purse from Barney's and received a similar line of questioning about how she could afford the bag.  Why she used her tax rebate money to buy a purse that expensive is beyond me.  Maybe she and the young man are both rich.  It's moot anyway.  The point is that they were both making legitimate purchases, but were accused of being shady people.

How does Jay Z tie into all of this? Well, he has a contract with Barney's to launch some new holiday clothing next month. Critics are calling upon him to cut ties with Barney's to take a stand against "shopping while black" incidents. However, Jay Z did release a statement on his website that basically denounces discrimination without condemning Barney's.

It appears that Jay Z will choose his pockets over his people and that will be unfortunate for Jay Z if Barney's is guilty of profiling.  Tons of people will be pissed at Jay Z saying he's too cowardly to speak out.  Including Hitler in the video below.  He was really pissed!
 

Now, I lost respect for Jay Z long ago, so this incident doesn't affect how I feel about him.  I lost respect for Jay Z after he dissed a living legend in Harry Belafonte. I can't say that I won't be surprised if he indeed decides to continue his affiliation with Barney's even if it's proven they were at fault. But despite that, this may surprise you: I don't think he should be obligated to cut ties with the store.

I just have a problem with Jay Z saying nothing about it for as long as he did. Nothing. He can at least condemn the incident even if he doesn't condemn the store.  We know for a fact that the incident with the young man happened and we know without a fact that it landed him in jail.

But, nope that's not his style. He's not going to piss off a store selling his over-priced swag.  He's going to play the victim and whine about people attacking his character.  And again, to his credit, Jay Z is being victimized here to a certain extent because he had nothing to do with what happened.  But, he's too self-centered to realize who the real victims are in this ordeal.

As for the store, I just think that Barney's needs to readjust the attitude of its employees. I won't call a franchise "racist" for the actions of a couple of idiots.  I seriously doubt that they tell their employees to "follow all black customers."

Famous people, regardless of color, would do whatever it took to right a wrong.  That trend died a decade or two ago and got replaced with, "I gotta get mine, you gotta get yours."  Just like we do with politicians, we blindly support our favorite celebrities despite the fact that they don't always care about our well-being.

Do celebs/athletes have any kind of responsibility to speak up for the "right thing?"

Oh, Judge Joe, say it ain't so!  If you haven't heard by now, Judge Joe Brown was caught slippin' recently.  He was in Hollywood drinking on a few Bombay Sapphires when a guy with a camera thought it would be a great idea to interview him.

Unfortunately for JJB, he was clearly drunk.  Now, although JJB's show has been canceled for six months, the guy still has a reputation for being "old school" and for "taking care of business."  That reputation could have probably led to politics or public speaking if he wasn't interested in returning to your everyday courtroom again.

However, despite his right to have drinks and enjoy life, he put himself in a very vulnerable position.  This tends to happen to mostly everyone who drinks for more than just the taste.  He left himself wide open to be embarrassed in social media and on TV news gossip stations.

He constantly used profanity during the interview as he posed with some young, attractive ladies.  He even mentioned that he made as much as $20 million per year on his show.  I'm not sure if that's true or not, but if it is, then that must mean that Judge Judy is raking in $30 million per year because her show has kicked butt routinely for a decade now.

The one thing that I will say about JJB is that he's truly a man in love.  He bragged on his hot wife constantly during his slurred interview and he appeared to be very proud of her.  Ladies, any time a man is drunk and he can't stop talking about you, then that man definitely has some love in his heart.

JJB is someone I looked up to in regards to being a model TV personality.  I still think that he's that guy because we all make mistakes.  But, he put himself out there in the worst way.  He showed a side that the public didn't need to see.  We all have something, regardless if it's as innocent as having a few too many to getting busy in the bedroom, that makes us look different to people if the public sees it on camera.

Drinking alone in public is a bad idea if you don't know when to stop.  Someone sober should be around to prevent something like this from occurring.  Judge Joe Brown now has one more court appearance to make in his life: and it's in front of the court of public opinion.

Season 2 starts on June 19th!

YouTube provides quite a few entertaining series to follow.  Some of the shows that I follow regularly are: "Awkward Black Girl," "Mortal Kombat: Legacy," and "How Men Become Dogs."  However, my favorite, by far, is "The Unwritten Rules."

"UR" is a show about a young, black woman named "Racey" who struggles to fit into Corporate America.  Not being allowed to just simply exist within the workplace and do her job, Racey has to put up with white co-workers who are completely uncomfortable around black people.  They question her hair, food items and even her belief in Santa Claus.

And to make matters worse, she also has to deal with black co-workers who think she's somehow abandoned their race to fit into "White World."  Because Racey has a better position in the company than they do, she is treated as if she thinks that she's better than her black peers.

The show is shot in a style similar to "The Office" and is based on a book called "40 Hours and an Unwritten Rule" which was written by Kim Williams.  Kim also writes for the "UR" web series and does a great job sifting through a plot in six to eight minutes for each episode.  On top of it always being an interesting story, there is plenty of comedy to entertain you in the process.  However, what makes the show so addictive on top of the storyline is that the characters are likable.  Each one brings something different to the mix that makes the show unique and worth following.

I can personally relate to the show because I've been in some of the situations Racey experiences.  I've been the solo office black guy who is too white for my own people, but too black for white people to feel completely comfortable around.  I've had the insensitive boss who didn't have a clue when she's offended someone.  And I've had the nosy co-worker who acts like she's my friend yet secretly hates everything about me.  Even for the things I've never experienced personally, I've seen them played out over the course of a couple of decades in the workplace.

Check out a sample of the show to get a feel for it and I'm sure you'll like it enough to follow.  Take a few minutes and give this show a chance and I guarantee that you'll be a fan. It's less than six minutes long.  Here's the first episode:

(VIDEOS) The New Harlem Shake?

Okay, I'm all for new trends and viral videos, but I'm so confused on this one.  First of all, the Harlem Shake is a dance that's been around for probably more than a decade.  It goes as shown below...

However, it's back again and with a twist.  A very crazy twist, I might add.  People are uploading videos to YouTube of their version of the Harlem Shake and it looks nothing like the original.  In fact, the entire concept of the video is one person dancing until a certain part of the song and then...  well, watch the video below to get  taste of what happens...



So, the videos are generally 30 seconds long and it spotlights one person before everyone else joins him by doing something totally off-the-wall. This one I don't understand, but it makes me literally laugh out loud every time I see it...

So, you get the point by now. This is the new "planking" and I have to admit that it's actually funnier. It requires more creativity, if you ask me. Despite it being extremely stupid, sometimes a little stupidity goes a long way to bringing a smile across sensible people's faces! Screech! Bang!

Screech! Bang! Those are the two sounds that I hear whenever the rain is coming down hard and I'm on Interstate 55 traveling.

I'm not sure how things are in your state, but here in Mississippi, rain has no effect on most drivers. Even if the roads can be slick and the rain can get heavy, it's not uncommon to see someone driving 75 mph past you on I-55.

You'll see someone pass you, as if they're riding with velcro tires on a carpet, only to see them five miles down the road facing the opposite direction in the ditch or in the median.

Why do people drive so freakin' fast in the rain?  I don't get it.  Water is wet.  Wet is slippery.  Slippery is dangerous.  What is there not to get?

Back in April, I'm driving during a downpour and although the speed limit in the area I was traveling is 60 mph, but I was driving around 50 mph.  The reason I went slower is because that seemed to be a nice, controlled speed in which I felt comfortable that I could handle my vehicle if something were to go wrong.

People were passing me doing 65, 70 or as much as 75 mph!  I thought that people would slow down when approaching a dangerous part of I-55 called "Waterworks Curve."  This particular curve has probably caused more accidents than any other place in the Jackson Metro area.

Well, I was wrong to think that as you can see in the video below...

They're just zooming past me and into the first part of the curve like the weather is dry. The Waterworks Curve has 4 curves in it like two S's attached from top to bottom yet people act as if they're driving on the Autobahn in a Lamborghini.  I just shook my head and continued to watch for spinning cars.  I knew that it was bound to happen.

About five years ago, a former co-worker of mine had a car accident during a storm.  She was driving down I-55 and hit a puddle of water.  The next thing she remembered was waking up to a paramedic's flashlight in her eyes.  Luckily, she wasn't hurt badly.  However, when she returned to work a few days later, I was speaking to her in the break room.  "Q," she started, "I'm suing Goodyear."

"Goodyear Tires?" I asked.

"Yeah," she replied.  "They sold me all-weather tires and I still hydroplaned and wrecked the other day."

I started laughing until I realized that she was dead-serious.  "You can't sue Goodyear for driving too fast!" I exclaimed.  "That's like suing Chevrolet for their airbag not protecting you after driving over a cliff.  You have to maintain a certain level of responsibility no matter the safety claims."

The stunned look on her face spoke volumes.  She either never thought about it or just didn't have someone to teach her that all-weather tires are to assist you in controlling your vehicle, not prevent you from crashing it.

SMH  

Is that the problem with all of these people that I see flying past me on the street?  Did no one take time to explain things the way that my parents did?  I can recall my father telling me (way before driving age) that when I got old enough to drive that I should ignore the speed limit in bad weather and drive safely.  I'd like to honestly think that had he not instructed me, that I would have figured it out for myself since I'm "Mr. Common Sense" and all.  But, living in today's society where people let others do the thinking for them, it is even more important that parents explain how driving is a privledge and not a right.  They can also explain how a car can hydroplane in two inches of water, too.

After visiting downtown, The Mrs. and I started to make our way back home and guess what we see?

This occurred at a day care in Vicksburg, Mississippi, which is about 45 miles west of Jackson. This video infuriates me. Mainly because a child was victimized and I don't have enough fingers to point and place blame.  Who do you blame?

A) The boy who violently bullied this little girl. 

B) The parent(s) of the boy who either haven't been doing their job or have missed something in regards to their son's behavior. 

C) The day care employee who ignored the girl's crying for the duration of the torture. 

D) The father's reaction when he took his anger out on the wrong child.

Who's to blame in this? I focus most of my attention on the day care employee. She should have been trained to notice and respond accordingly to this abuse. Safety should be her main priority at all times. She has been appropriately charged with two counts of child neglect.

How do you discipline the boy? It's obviously something really wrong with a 9 year old putting that type of force into bullying a toddler. I think he's too far gone for anything other that psychiatric counseling. Maybe Reckmonster can help with that theory. A follow-up story says that the kid has been kicked out of the day care. You think?

The final question is: where are his parents? I've yet to see one on TV. The victim's father apologized for losing his cool and he may face charges, but the perpetrator's parents are unknown to me.

So, where do you start placing blame?

Okay, I'll keep this brief: you know that I'm all about supporting the dreams of others. Well, the one thing that I will support in almost anyway that I can is a kid with a dream. A former co-worker of mine has a daughter who is trying to make things happen. She wants to be featured by Seventeen Magazine. In order to do so, she must receive enough "Thumbs Up" on her YouTube makeup presentation.

Synthetic Marijuana & Ninjas

What in the Wide World of Sports is going on with everyone? Who would have thought that people wanting to get a simple buzz would turn into synthetic marijuana and ninjas? Yes, ninjas.

Check out the video below where this guy, who is higher than giraffe booty, decides to go Jackie Chan on some cops. The one minute mark is where things go haywire.

Did you see how dude channeled his inner-Neo and went Matrix on those cops? My question is: did he know martial arts before he got high or did the chronic instill some Crouching Junkie Hidden Dragon in him?

I'm not a drinker and I'm definitely not a smoker. I'll just stick to an all-natural high. I've never been drunk or high and I cannot stand the feeling of not being in control. I even hated being under the influence of anesthesia shortly after my knee surgery last November. If drugs are making people do flip-kicks and eat each other, than count me out.

YouTube Killed The Radio Star

Worst YouTube video ever: "It's So Cold In Tha D"

I was talking to a friend of mine recently (M&M) and he brought up something I'd never considered before: YouTube Killed the Radio Star.

As recently as the 90's, one had to have talent in order to have an opportunity to be called a "star" or "an artist." Those days are long gone. Now, all a person needs is a camera and a YouTube account. It doesn't matter how well you play or sing. It only matters if you're trendy enough to "go viral."

There were two televised talent shows that I remember watching a lot while growing up: "Star Search" and "Showtime at the Apollo." Those were basically the only two options of being seen in the world in hopes of becoming a music legend. You even had to beat the odds just in order to make it as a contestant on one of those shows. Now, there is no direct competition to getting an opportunity to be seen. There is no more "8 Mile" as "M&M" said. There's no more separating the best from the wack. There's no more school talent show to see who's good enough for regional, good enough for state, good enough for a national contest.

So, there's no way to weed out the non-talented from the talented. If you want an opportunity to share your skills (or lack thereof) to the world, just shoot a video. It's free and it's easy. Ask this guy...





When I first saw this video, I thought it was a Chappelle Show skit. It was almost a week before someone convinced me that it was supposed to be a serious video. Over 8 million hits for his rapping "skills." Now, I'm not sure how many of these millions watched this because they thought Yung Humma had talent. I'm also not sure how many millions watched this because someone sent them there for a good laugh (I fall into this group). People get on YouTube, rap/sing and then parade around like stars. And some people are crazy enough to believe that they are stars simply because of the number of hits that they have.

M&M was onto something when he brought up this concept and if you want more of his "M&M'isms" then check him out here. Now, don't get me wrong. There are some extremely talented people on YouTube who rap, sing and even act. There's Issa Rae, Real Dondada and this young lady below who goes by the name "Jane Doe." The problem is that they can't always get traction on page hits because people like the Numa Numa guy and Why Must I Cry guy get all of the attention. After all, Americans love a train wreck.

So, if you're going to check out YouTube videos for performing artists, then do us all a favor: please show your support for real talent, like Jane Doe, and give a thumbs up. And for the "Lemme Smang It" types, please thumb them down so the rest of us can be forewarned. Let's focus on real talent and not gimmicks. I can only take so many Nicki Minaj songs.

How can you get so caught up, so emotional, so outraged, that you're willing to take out innocent people and a store to run down a woman? Then to top it off, you steal another person's vehicle and wreck it in a head-on collision?

What should the punishment be for this idiot?

As a man, I'm a huge sports fan. Not much of a baseball fan, but if I'm at a ballpark, I'd make an effort to catch a foul ball or a home run if given the opportunity.

Mommy, Look At The Penguins!

"Mommy, look at the penguins!" is what I would imagine hearing from a child who is visiting the United States for the first time. This imaginary child from a foreign land would not be referring to the frigid birds of the tundra, but instead... idiots and their sagging pants.





My mom and / or dad would have stapled my pants up to my nipples before they let me walk around sagging like a convict. Yes, I said convict. After all, that's where the trend allegedly got its start.

Prisoners were forbidden to wear belts in jail because some of them would use the belt to hang themselves. As a result of being beltless, the pants they wore tended to sag. This made it more difficult to commit suicide and it also made it more difficult to run when trying to escape custody. It was also stated that the men wearing their pants "extra low" were some other prisoner's "hoe." Some how in the 90's, this prison trend crept its way into hip hop culture and has now infected our kids. I'm guessing because they're too stupid to research the origin of things.

Now, let me state this first: I have no problem with kids having trends. I participated in some trends as a youth and I understand how cool it looks when you're young. That's why you have to be a certain age to drink because youngsters are naturally stupid and can't tell "cool" from "fool" very easily. What I don't understand is how something so flat-out laughable has become cool. People used to moon other people as a joke, but now it's a fashion trend to see someone's butt. No longer do you have to go to a strip club or call a plumber in order to see a butt crack.


Can anyone under 25 years old explain to me how pulling up your pants every three steps and walking like a penguin is cool?

If you were a prisoner, wouldn't this be more of an invitation that a fashion statement?

Would You Go to Jail for Football Tickets?

Remember a few weeks ago when I asked you "Would You Go to Jail for a Hamburger?" Well, that was a true story about me avoiding the wrong place at the wrong time. The people in the above video didn't avoid their situation and it landed them in jail. At least a dozen of them, owing up to $75,000 in child support, were taken into custody after the sting. One of the arrested guys had several hundred dollars in his possession. Another asked after the arrest if he was still getting the tickets. LOL!

Serves them right! Whatever it takes to bring deadbeats to justice, I'm all for it. Kids don't ask to be here, but some "parents" treat them like accessories. There are too many people who wish they had kids or wish they had custody of their kids, yet these losers choose to not even try.

So, if it takes telling them they won tickets to the Super Bowl, front row seats to the Grammys or a private viewing session with Jenna Jameson of one of her movies, then so be it. Something needs to be done.

Have you ever had anything this good? I recall driving two or there hours to see a woman as a youth. It seemed to be worth it to me. But, have you ever waited hours... for a hamburger?





I lost count some where around 87 cars in line in that video. This hamburger must be the best ever! If you would have shown me this video without any captions, I would have thought that it was Black Friday at Best Buy and they were giving away the entire Star Wars series on Blu Ray along with an iPad 2 in exchange for four can goods. I've never seen a line this long for any restaurant.

They opened their first In-N-Out Burger location in Texas in the Dallas suburb of Allen. In-N-Out is big on the West Coast and it's nice to see certain iconic restaurants spread love across the country.

One lady was so happy over the opening of the location, that she was brought to tears.



If the burgers are this freakin' good, then I need to load up the Regal and jet over to Allen, TX right now! Bringing people to tears? Is the burger made with unicorn meat or something magical? The next time I visit my brother in Dallas, I'm going to ask him to roll over to In-N-Out and give the burger a try. If it's better than the Hut's Hamburger I had in Austin a few years back, then they may be onto something. Mooner Johnson can probably testify to Hut's. I think he's from Austin.

But, if the line is that long when we arrive, then we're just going to hit a Burger King and call it a day!

Star Wars, Angry Cops, and Feisty Ladies

Okay, first of all, what's up with the brothas with accents in Boba Fett gear? LOL! What club did they attend dressed like that?

Second, here's a piece of advice to everyone out there: if a cop asks you to turn around, lie down, and / or shut up, then it's in your best interest to do so. Cops are severely underpaid and under-appreciated. They tend to get agitated with you if you force them to do more than what is necessary. It's easier to comply and sort things later rather than get rowdy and potentially catch a beat down.

Finally, this is the way news is delivered today. No longer do your local news channel have exclusives. Everyone has a cell phone with a camera, so now, everyone is a reporter. But, despite the fact that there are so many video witnesses, cops don't appear to be shy when it comes to bringing the pain.

Now, as far as the video is concerned, I don't think the police had the situation under control and that's why it got out of hand. There was no reason to struggle with the lady like they did. Because he appeared to be upset with her being stubborn, he lost his cool and his aggressiveness provoked the actions of the lady who intervened. In a situation like this, I do feel that the police should be firm, but calm when emotions are this high. I would have cuffed both ladies to each other and told them I'd be outside whenever they wanted someone to unlock them.

Are you allowed to defend yourself against a cop if he / she swings on you or do you just lay there and pray for the butt whippin' to stop?

I know this much: I'd much rather deal with Angry Birds than angry cops.
