The Cost to Relationships and Families

This is part five of a five-part series entitled "The Silent Collapse of Men in the Smart Phone Era". It's based on a series of discussions I've had with men who are friends or relatives. The men's ages range from 23 - 51 years old. I'd love your feedback.

The Cost to Relationships and Families

A distracted man may still physically be present while emotionally disappearing.

He comes home but never fully arrives.
He sits with his kids while staring at another man’s podcast clip.
He lies next to his wife while scrolling through strangers.
He loses interest in conversation because his brain now expects constant stimulation every eight seconds.

Over time, resentment grows on both sides.

The family notices. Children notice. Partners notice.

The phone quietly becomes the third person in every relationship.

Men Need Purpose More Than Distraction

Most men do not need another motivational clip.

They need:

  • sleep
  • discipline
  • friendship
  • purpose
  • physical activity
  • real conversation
  • time away from screens
  • connection with their families

The solution is not becoming anti-technology. Phones are tools. The problem begins when the tool starts shaping a man’s identity, emotions, confidence, and attention span. A phone should assist a man’s life, not replace it.

Right now, too many men are slowly disappearing into distraction while calling it entertainment. We have to stop making excuses and help each other focus on what's important. We have to hold each other accountable and allow entertainment to be entertainment and real life to be real life.

We can't blend the two.

Part 4: Rage Is Becoming Entertainment

Sleep Is Being Destroyed

This is part three of a five-part series entitled "The Silent Collapse of Men in the Smart Phone Era". It's based on a series of discussions I've had with men who are friends or relatives. The men's ages range from 23 - 51 years old. I'd love your feedback.

Sleep Is Being Destroyed

Men are staying awake later than ever:

  • scrolling sports debates (I'm guilty of this)
  • gaming
  • gambling
  • watching highlight clips (Guilty again)
  • arguing online
  • consuming rage content (Been there. Done that.)

Then they wake up exhausted, irritable, mentally foggy, and disconnected from their families.

A tired man becomes a short-tempered husband.
A distracted man becomes a distant father.
An emotionally absent man becomes a stranger in his own house.

And most of it starts with “just checking my phone for a few minutes.”

We have to learn how to disconnect because it's taking way too much of a toll on our lives and families. The glow of the phone lighting up the bedroom every night is a sign that you no longer have control over your life. You have to prioritize sleep in order to function in a society that is more chaotic everyday than it was just one week prior.

This world will chew you up and spit you out if you don't rest. And filling your subconscious with endless content right before bed won't allow you to truly unwind thus always keeping you on edge.

Pornography and Emotional Numbness

This is part one of a five-part series entitled "The Silent Collapse of Men in the Smart Phone Era". It's based on a series of discussions I've had with men who are friends or relatives. The men's ages range from 23 - 51 years old. I'd love your feedback.

Pornography and Emotional Numbness

One of the least discussed issues is how smartphones have changed intimacy.

Many men now consume endless stimulation through pornography and social media while becoming emotionally disconnected from real relationships. Attention spans shrink. Patience disappears. Real intimacy starts feeling “slow” compared to instant digital gratification.

Some men stop pursuing connection altogether because rejection online feels constant:

  • ignored messages
  • comparison culture
  • status competition
  • unrealistic expectations

Instead of improving emotionally, many retreat digitally. The result is loneliness hidden beneath entertainment and it's sad to see. So many guys who have millions of options at their fingertips but 99% of them aren't a reality.

And even if a lot of the options were available are they even real? Guys get so enamored with edited and curated photos to the point that seeing a woman in real life is almost disappointing to them. There's no air brush filter when someone is standing in front of you. No perfect pose when someone is in motion.

So many guys have become numb to real women and it's sad that the appreciation is gone. Older men need to teach younger guys to treat social media as they do TV shows and movies. It's not all real. It's entertainment. Fantasy. Thirst trap.

There are so many beautiful women on this planet who do not need social media magic to look like someone special and men need to start appreciating them again.
