Call Off The Dogs

Okay, okay, okay. Everyone has had plenty of time to take their shots at Michael Vick about this dog fighting thing, but when will it end? It's time to stop hating on Mike and I'll tell you why:

Because people need to be more upset about more important things in this country.

Recently, baseball player, Mark Buehrle was being interviewed about his effort to rescue a wounded dog (arrow stuck in abdomen). While discussing the noble effort, he took time to say the following about Vick:

"He had a great year and a great comeback, but there were times where we watched the game, and I know it's bad to say, but there were times where we hope he gets hurt," Buehrle told MLB.com. "Everything you've done to these dogs, something bad needs to happen to these guys."

"...hope he gets hurt?" In 2007, Vick was convicted for his role in dog fighting. Here's how Michael Vick got "hurt":

- Convicted of a felony related to a dogfighting ring and served 19 months in prison.
- Lost a $100 million dollar contract with the NFL, his starting job, his home, and two seasons of play.
- Will forever be labelled as a dog killer.

How much more hurting does he have to do before you're satisfied? Look, I love animals, especially dogs, but personally, I value human life more than animal life. I know that some people treat dogs like family and I'm okay with that to a certain extent. But some of the things I've heard coming from the mouths of dog lovers like Vick should be "put down" or "neutered" are some of the most unjustifiable things I've heard in a long time.

We're not talking about O.J. Simpson killing people or R. Kelly peeing on a 14-year old girl, but about a man who fought and killed dogs. Now, of those three, which two do you think are more serious of crimes?

Yet, I have seen many picket signs condemning Vick and many interviews of people who are absolutely disgusted about what he did to those dogs.

Then, I started thinking, "how many picket signs do I see at court houses across the country when a lady gets raped?"
"When was the last time someone came on MSNBC to talk about a man abusing his child?"

We're so numb to crimes against humans that it doesn't matter any more. "Law & Order" and "C.S.I." makes it easy for us to be nonchalant about dead bodies, I guess. Unless it's one of Michael Vick's dogs.

He did his time. Well, actually, thanks to some of you, he's still doing his time. He lost his job. He lost his money. He lost his home. He lost time with his kids. He lost his livelihood. Plenty of people have done worse and suffered less. Let it go, people. Call off the dogs, so to speak.

I have nothing against dog lovers, but let's keep things in perspective, people, okay? What Michael Vick did was wrong and I can't stress that enough. But if you want to speak out against him, then I expect you to speak out against other criminals with the same intensity!

To help you with that task, I've provided a list below of the names of NFL players arrested in 2010. I want you to sort through the DUI's, assaults, and domestic violence charges until you find a new athlete to hate on in 2011. One that has endangered the life of a human:

  1. I just stumbled upon this, but wow! This is a pretty dumb post. Vick tortured and murdered dogs. Electrocuted them, held their heads under water until they drowned. He didn't simply just kill them in some humane way like he was a vet putting them down. Michael Vick is a sick individual. If he could make money from fighting little kids and then killing them, he would do that. His brain is messed up. You can obviously see in his latest interviews that he really doesn't care, nor is he sorry, that he was murdering dogs. He is just sorry that he got caught. He lost enough? He just signed a 100 million dollar contract with 40 million dollars guaranteed. That's at least 40 million dollars paid to a dog torturing, murdering, felon! He deserves that? Most other felons get out of prison and the best job they can get is fast food, if their lucky. And as far as the comparisons to those other NFL players: Really? Guys that drove their car with their license suspended or expired? All I can do is laugh at that. As much as I don't like drunk drivers, really? Compared to a murderer? Uhh, no. And a lot of those charges are just that. They're not convictions. Vick was convicted and admitted for/to his crimes. He's guilty of murder. And now he is filthy rich. Nice.

  2. First of all, thanks for taking the time to comment. Regardless if you agree with me or not, your input is appreciated. I'll stress again that I'm an animal lover, but they always have been and always will be second to my love of humans. I guess I'm sick in the head like that, huh?

Second of all, you comparing Vick killing dogs to child murders is the lack of perspective I was referring to in this post not to mention scary. You're the perfect example to prove my point and for that, I'm appreciative.

The Dictionary.com definition of murder is: "the killing of another human being under conditions specifically covered in law." I don't see "animal" any where in that definition, so your classification is wrong. It doesn't mean that what Vick did was not heinous. I think what he did was flat-out evil. Yet, I do have a problem with the outrage people have over the treatment of animals when compared with the treatment of fellow humans.

And for the list of NFL players that I provided, I find it humorous that you singled out driving with a suspended license. Then again, people will pick and choose what they want to try and justify their agenda. There are people in the NFL who have killed people while driving drunk and they are still playing today with little-to-no jail time at all. Dead people aren't important? Again, "perspective" is the whole meaning of my post (which I think you missed).

Lastly, Vick paid his debt to society and has earned the right to make whatever money his talents allow. Just like any actor, politician, etc. who have been convicted of crimes have returned to making millions. He did what was required of him and if that's not enough for you, then take it up with the justice system because he owes you nothing.

As for you saying Vick "doesn't care." I don't know if he does or not. I can only hope that he does. But, I hardly doubt that someone like you who is "anonymous" and refers to someone's personal opinion as "dumb" is capable of seeing how sincere someone may be. Especially if they already have made their personal judgments against them.

So, let's remove all of the emotion that you have and look at this from a "common sense" perspective and maybe you'll see the real meaning of my post.

Thanks for the comment and thanks for being an example.
