Now, back in my day, "Quincy" was pretty unique. I only met two others up until I reached college. It's nothing compared to the names people have for their kids today. I've heard "ESPN" (pronounced es-spen), twins named "Orangejello" (pronounced oron-jalo) and "Lemonjello" (la-mon-jalo) and even an urban legend about a girl named "La-a" (pronounced la-dash-ah).
Yeah, you read that last one correctly. So, when I came across this particular name last year, I exploded in laughter before starting to sympathize with the child. At some point of her life, I'm sure some of her classmates will pick on her. Here's the post from a year ago with that child's unusual name...
What's the strangest name for a child you've ever heard?
Wow! People really will go out of their way to be unique and not even consider their kid!
ReplyDeleteYears ago when I started at the hospital I worked in registration and we got to input the new baby names after the parents filled out the birth certificates. They are all kind of a blur now, but I really wish I could remember them, because some of them were priceless!
Melanie, I'm sure they probably had you laughing at some while scratching your head at others. They all sound cute to some people, but it's not cute when it's on a resume'.
DeleteShithead.
ReplyDeleteShih-thay-ed.
NO JOKE.
LOL! We had one in Jackson, too! Must be a popular name. He was from South Africa, I think. Guys that used to work with me at the airport used to prank call him and piss him off.
Deletethis is a topic close to my heart at the moment (6 weeks away from being a dad).
ReplyDeleteI think there has to be a balance between really common names and those that are very obscure.
Congrats on the newborn! Do you have a name yet? I'd say to follow Jay-Z and Beyonce's model and consider branding something original. :)
DeleteNah, seriously, congratulations!
Great googly moogly. I used to work with kids - and some of them had THE weirdest names. "Kingthing" - yes, that was his first name. His mom was some kind of whack job. The kid hated his name so in first grade, he demanded that everyone just start calling him Max. Smart kid. Another kid - a girl was named Athaia (uh-tay-uh) - her dad was Greek, so I'm guessing it was a Greek thing. I went to high school with one girl - her name was "Honor." I think her parents were hippies - because her three sisters were named "Faith," "Hope," and "Joy." Weirdos.
ReplyDeleteKingthing? LOL! Wow. That's just... different. Max is a good name though. I just don't understand how they expect a kid to go through life with such an odd name.
DeleteI went to school with a boy named Dum - I think he was Vietnamese. He was teased to no end and I always felt soooo bad for him! I hear he's a big shot CFO now. Figures.
ReplyDeleteI also knew a child (she's probably a teen now) named... let's see if I can get this right... Sha'QueeThiaunnah. Blank damn stare.
Huh? You're kidding on that last name. Sha-wha? LOL! As for Dum, I bet he looks smart now!
