Spouses Have To Evolve

I just had an interesting conversation with a friend about how some long-term marriages can sometimes fall apart.  So many of us have the misconception that once you're married, you're safe.  After "I do", then you think that you can just sit back and relax forever.

Well, that's not the case at all.  It's safe to say that if your marriage makes it long-term (10 years or more), that you're well beyond most incompatibility issues.  However, there are long-term concerns.  Most of them center around evolution or the lack thereof.

Although "love is blind", we shouldn't be.  Some of us don't change, yet we fail to pay attention to our spouses changing.  My friend said that, "it's important to grow individually and collectively.  If only one person is growing, then they outgrow the other."

Very true.  Marriage is a journey.  You may have to do something different stylistically, intimately, or even open your mindset to change in order to keep up with your spouse.  For example: let's say that you marry someone who at one point, just like you, loves to eat junk food and sit on the couch and watch movies.  For ten years, this is what the two of you enjoy.  However, now you're approaching your 40's and your spouse starts to get concerned about health issues.  So, they join a gym and work out regularly.  If you choose to not evolve with your spouse, then you run the risk of an eventual issue in the marriage.

Is one spouse wrong for wanting a healthier lifestyle?  No. Is the other one wrong for wanting a more relaxed lifestyle?  No.  But, odds are, they will clash at some point.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the saying,"you should accept me for who I am" applies to both spouses and not just for the one who refuses to change.

Michael’s Daughter is a one-woman show created and performed by Actress Ciera Payton. As an aspiring young actress dealing with the ups and downs of the Hollywood shuffle, Ciera is suddenly confronted by the constant letters from her incarcerated father. These letters provide the backdrop for her soul searching and a beginning to address her unconventional upbringing and troubled past.

Her New Orleans roots are tested constantly through a series of failed relationships, struggles to make ends meet, and the ongoing loneliness that comes with Hollywood dream chasing. Ciera guides the audience on a journey from a little girl in New Orleans' 3rd Ward to a woman in Los Angeles fighting to forgive her family.

Throughout the play, Ciera artfully portrays her stuttering, city-slick Father, southern belle Mother, and her endearingly crass Aunt Patty. She does so in a manner, completely filled with humor, compassion, and understanding. Michael’s Daughter's universal appeal and impact transcends race, gender, and economic class.

People of all backgrounds will be touched by this story and moved to DO SOMETHING and MAKE A CHANGE after watching it.

Remaining true to her goal to give back and help in providing creative outlets for inner city children, Payton is pledging a portion of the donations received through the IndieGoGo campaign to Step Up Women's Network AND Girls for a Change.

Women in Action

Things have changed since I watched television on a 19-inch Magnavox color TV back in 1978. My father, brother and I would watch a lot of movies when there weren't any sports on. I became a huge fan of action movies. I was either watching Clint Eastwood shoot a bad guy in a Western flick or checking out Charles Bronson blowing up some low lifes in the city streets.

However, around the early-to-mid 80's, I started seeing a new trend in action movies like "Alien," "Halloween," and "Nightmare on Elm Street." I started seeing females with the leading role in action movies. Back then, there weren't too many women in action movies. Sure, you had Pam Grier in the 70's and Cynthia Rothrock in the 80's, but there just weren't too many options at the theater to see women who consistently made action flicks. Most of the time, you had to catch these ladies via Blockbuster video.

In 2012, we now have a plethora of females who kick butt for a living in the movie theaters. Most of us are familiar with Angelina Jolie's track record. The sultry actress, with the lips that would make a lollipop weep tears of joy, is probably the most popular female action hero at this time. With movies like "Wanted," "Salt," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" and the "Tomb Raider" series, she's leading the pack when it comes to being a leading character in great action movies. By the way, if you haven't seen "Wanted" yet, then do yourself a favor and put it in your Netflix queue now. It's "The Matrix 2.0."

But, I have some other favorites that I enjoy seeing on the big screen as well. You have probably heard of all of them or maybe saw them without knowing who they were.

 Michelle Rodriguez
Why no one has developed a series of movies starring Michelle in a leading role is beyond me. She has the toughness and edginess that makes her the female version of a Jason Statham. With roles in "Machete," "Fast & Furious," "SWAT" and "Girl Fight," Rodriguez normally takes a "tomboy" approach to her roles and pulls it off nicely.

Zoe Saldana
This lady is blowing up these days. She's starting to appear in blockbuster movies on a regular basis. With flicks like "The Losers," "Avatar" and "Star Trek" to her credit, she is on her way to be one of Hollywood's highest paid ladies. Saldana has even recently landed a starring role, in a movie worthy of a sequel, "Colombiana." What started as an appearance as an uncredited extra on "Law & Order" back in the 90's has turned into millions.

Devon Aoki
She's very close to being my favorite, but that lack of a mainstream, leading roles prevents it. Aoki, who is trademarked with that permanent scowl in each movie, doesn't have the acting talents of some of the more well-known actresses. But, despite being limited in the types of roles she could play, has the potential to be a huge star with the right script. She wasn't that appealing to me in "2 Fast & 2 Furious," but her roles in "DOA: Dead or Alive" and "Sin City" were right up her alley. Hopefully, the Sin City sequel, scheduled for release in 2013, will finally put her on the map.  She's an assassin movie waiting to happen if anyone is willing to give her the opportunity.

Guys, who is your favorite female action star?
Ladies, who is your favorite male action star?

Oh, Please Let This Be True!

Any resemblance?

Okay, so by now you may have heard the rumors that Khloe Kardashian was fathered by "The Juice!" That's right. The man who cannot keep his name out of the news despite being only four years into a 33 year jail sentence: Orenthal James Simpson! Oh, please let this be true!

Why am I so excited about the possibility of O.J. Simpson being Khloe's father? Because THIS is reality TV. Although it's just a rumor, isn't this the type of thing that these reality shows portray in their shows? The Maury Povich type of plots that are scripted happen to occur on these shows that causes you to tune in the following week?

The story originated with two of the ex-wives of the late Robert Kardashian. Of course, Khloe denies it (can you blame her?) and said that the rumor is "laughable." A source told The National Enquirer (which is about as reputable as a hooker facing a 3rd strike) that Robert Kardashian acknowledged that he wasn't having sex with his then wife, Kris Jenner, when Khloe was conceived. O.J. also bragged about fathering a millionaire's love child, but never came clean on who because of the possible backlash ruining his endorsements. Endorsements he would later lose after killing two people... allegedly.

In the meantime, Khloe will stick to her guns and not address the allegations. Of course, a DNA test would solve everything, but she'll never take one. The possibility of her being a Simpson probably causes her to cry herself to sleep every night.

"Do I look like a killer?"

Chick Flicks Lie

Okay, so I'm seeing the "New Year's Eve" movie advertisement for the 70th time today. This movie features an appearance by pretty much everyone in the world who has ever acted. Pretty much everyone except Andrew Dice Clay has a part in this film.

Anyhoo, these movies draw tons of women to the theaters (along with the guys who are willing to sit through the movie to get into their pants). Well, I hate to be the one to break the bad news to all of you ladies, but you know that here at the Thank, Q site: "Some things just need to be said."

Chick flicks lie. They're modern-day fairytales that never come true. They sell a pipe dream about boy meets girl, boy loses girl and boy eventually finds girl and marries her. Well, relationships don't normally work like that. In real life, it's very uncommon to see a guy leave a woman at the altar to run to the woman he truly loves. Rich men don't save prostitutes off the street to show them a better life. A guy doesn't stop banging his sexy boss simply because he's attracted to an intern who's a better fit for him.

Wake up, ladies! It doesn't work like that. These films give false hope that romance still exists behind every corner. It doesn't. Romance isn't dead, but it's on life support. So, make sure you don't leave the theater all starry-eyed and waiting on some Matthew McConaughey to bump into you on a girls' night out with your homies, okay?

To be fair, I need to speak to the fellas, too. Guys, you have to stop thinking that the next woman you meet is going to be just as good as the hooker actress from the last porno you watched. We guys will watch these pornos and then try to figure out how we can get our girlfriend/wife to do some of the things we see in them. Get real, fellas! Stop thinking that life imitates porn! Every woman you date will not be Vanessa Del Rio or Jenna Jameson (sorry, but I don't know any other porn stars).
This could be your girl...  not!
Movies are fantasy. A lot of time, they show us the lives that we wish we could live. They sell a love story to the ladies that preserves hope that they'll actually find that Prince Charming. They can also sell a fantasy to us guys of a double-jointed woman who can suck a BB through a 50-foot garden hose. I have a former co-worker who claims to have watched "The Wedding Planner" over 50 times. She says that it gives her hope that true romance still exists.

Hmmmph. Well, I saw "The Transporter" for the third time the other day. It gives me hope that some day I'll be able to clear a room full of thugs with my martial arts moves.
